ADoM stands for Admissions Domain Mapping. An explanation of the project and documentation is published on the ADoM website.
The ADoM Knowledge Base is here. We would very much like to hear from admissions practitioners, so we have provided a simple way for you to comment on any page. Just go to the foot of the page and click on "Click here to tell us how this relates to what you do."
This knowledge base consists of a range of information about admissions and eAdmissions. Its purpose is to provide a description of admissions from the practitioners point of view, so that future eAdmissions development can progress on a foundation of knowledge about common current good practice. The information has been structured, so that we can capture details of the policies, functions, processes and activities that make up "admissions". The structure of the knowledge base is colour coded and pages have an appropriate background colour. For example all narrative and scenario pages have a lilac background. Please refer to the overview diagram for a key to the colours and to see where you are conceptually in the knowledge base.
We are providing several ways into the details of the knowledge base. These ways, which we call 'views', are given in the menu on the left of the knowledge base. However, for this edition we recommend that you access the information either through the links on the apples (click on any of the mauve blobs on the apples) or through the Narratives view.
The mauve blobs will each take you straight to the named narrative, which contains a textual description and a number of links. The narratives in this edition with most content are: "Choosing the right students for the course" and "Application from a learner with borderline qualifications".
For the scenarios in the narrative, click on any of the links in the slot called 'Consists of Scenarios'. You will then be able to read the scenarios, which are all linked together through a slot called 'links to next Scenarios'. Once you have browsed around here a little, we trust that you will be able to navigate elsewhere in the knowledge base, which includes narratives, scenarios and processes, some with process diagrams to help to explain the processes and procedures. The Narratives view takes you to a text page that includes a short list of 'instances'. These are examples of the narratives and will lead you to the same place as the mauve blobs.
Part of our work is to bring out the common processes that take place in admissions. However, we recognise that there is a great variety of practice, so we have described different admissions processes and activities by reference to 'admissions characteristic scales'. Please have a look at the Admissions Characteristic Scale View for a bit more about this. Each narrative, scenario, process and activity is described with reference to these characteristics.
Please note that we are gradually increasing the amount of material in the knowledge base, so that it will become more and more useful.
